桂花Osmanthus fragrans

This evergreen shrub or small tree can reach 7 meters in height, with grayish-white bark. Its leaves are opposite, leathery, elliptic or oblong-lanceolate, 3–8 cm long, pointed or acuminate at the apex, cuneate at the base, entire or sharply serrulate at the margin, with 6–8 pairs of veins protruding downwards. The petioles are short. Flowers are clustered in the leaf axils, dioecious, with thin, weak pedicels. The calyx is four-lobed, with toothed lobes. The corolla is four-lobed, splitting at the base, with oblong, white or yellow, fragrant lobes. Male flowers have two stamens enclosed within the corolla; female flowers have one pistil, a cylindrical style with a capitate stigma, and a two-loculed ovary. The drupe is oblong and contains a single seed. Flowering occurs from September to October.
